Glasgow Topography

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 1,800 topographical views of Glasgow which date from 1693 to the present. The collection contains some 1,000 prints, 500 watercolours and drawings and 125 oil paintings. There are also several reproductions and newspaper or magazine illustrations. The majority of the views depicted were chosen either for their historical significance or their picturesque aspects. Locations particularly favoured include Glasgow Cathedral, the river Clyde at Glasgow, Glasgow Cross and Trongate and Glasgow's medieval streets. Often these were done in groups numbering up to 100 or more in the manner of a pictorial survey. Many of these works are unique records of parts of the city which now no longer exist. They record buildings, both humble and architecturally significant, as well as the daily lives of Glasgow's people. Significant artists with works in the collection include Muirhead Bone, DY Cameron, William Simpson, John Slezer, Sam Bough and John Knox. Other artists represented include Joseph Swan and David Small.
