Political Parties

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1,200 objects relating to Glasgow's political history which date from between 1790 and 2003. This collection includes paintings, drawings, photographs, posters, sculpture, banners and ceramics. It also contains badges, medals, rosettes, furniture, lamps, leaflets, books, certificates, membership cards, trophies and awards, a miner's lamp, a hand bell and a clock. The most significant of this material relates to the development of socialism and left-wing politics in Glasgow from the late 19th century through to the era of the 'Red Clydeside'. These include objects belonging to or representing prominent political figures such as James Maxton, John Maclean and Keir Hardie. Additional material, relating to the influence of socialist ideas and politics in all areas of life, comes from the Socialist Sunday Schools, the Clarion movement, the Glasgow Orpheus Choir and the Reformers Bookstall. Reformers in the 18th century such as Thomas Muir and James Skirving are also represented. Part of the collection relates to Scottish nationalism and there is some material related to WE Gladstone, the Liberal, Scottish Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties as well as material about the establishment of the Scottish Parliament.
