Suffrage Movement

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 500 objects related to the Glasgow Suffrage movement which date from between 1792 and 1978. This collection includes banners, medals, badges, ceramics, sashes, postcards, photographs, books and leaflets. It reflects the series of campaigns for electoral reform and the extension of the vote from a property-related privilege to universal adult suffrage from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. Of particular significance are the collection of banners on this theme that cover the major franchise demonstrations of 1832 and 1884 and the collection representing the campaigns to extend the vote to women. The collection also contains objects and printed material that reflect anti-female suffrage views. The variety and rarity of the material in this collection bears witness to the role played by Glaswegians and the importance of Glasgow as a centre of the reform movement.
