Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 13 objects, dating from between 1895 and 2000, which relate to the Islamic community in Glasgow. This collection comprises 10 objects which were acquired in Glasgow in association with its Muslim communities, with the remaining three objects representing modern Islamic Art, purchased from Muslim artists living in the UK. Except for one object, all belong to the late 20th century. Objects include teo children’s books on Islam in the English language, two maps of the Islamic World published in London and in Leicester, a Qura'an cover, two Islamic greeting cards printed in the UK, a Muslim wedding invitation, an Arabic poster of the 99 names of God, and an invitation from the Lord Provost of Glasgow to meet with the Khan of Afghanistan in 1895. The three modern art items include an oil painting by Ahmed Mustafa, a work of calligraphy on paper by Ghani Al-Ani, and a painting by Tajamul Hussain. Islam is the second-largest religion in the world, originating in the seventh century. It encompasses many religious practices, the majority of which are defined by the observation of the Five Pillars of Islam, which unite Muslim communities throughout the world. It is the predominant religion in the Middle East, as well as Africa and Asia, however large communities are also located in China, Europe and Russia.
