Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 40 Korean artefacts dating broadly from between 1100 and 1959. This collection includes ceramics, textiles, shoes, clothing and celadon porcelain. It encompasses 12 domestic ceramic containers about 1900 which form part of the Watt Bequest, donated in 1953, a Korean woman's national dress, and children's shoes, which were presented by the Korean Minister of Construction, Mr Chun Ye Yong. An item of particular significance is a Korean celadon (sanggam), dating to the Koryo dynasty from the 12th and 13th centuries. Sanggam were luxury goods made for aristocrats and members of the royal family, and officials appointed by the court specifically supervised the kilns. This particular piece is decorated with a bright red lead glaze and is a rarity in design and high quality. The Korean peninsula is located in East Asia, bordered by China in the north-west and Russia in the north-east. It has been in existence since 2333 BC, only divided into its current state of North Korea and South Korea since 1945.
