Judaism Ritual

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 45 objects relating to Judaism rituals which date from between the 16th and 20th century. This collection includes objects that are primarily used in the ritual life of Judaism, in the celebration of religious festivals, the Sabbath celebration and the daily religious observances of many Jews. It includes two Hanukiyahs (a nine-branched candlestick used during the celebration of Hanukah), one Havdalah which is used during the Sabbath, two Yarmulkes worn by males in the Synagogue and five Phylacteries/Tefillin worn at certain times on the head and arms during ritual prayer. There is also one Shofar, two Seder plates used during Passover, three Yads (Torah Pointers) and three Mezuzahs which would have been fixed to the doorpost in a Jewish home. In addition there is one set of Torah scrolls and a Book of Esther scroll. There are also 22 greetings cards sent during festivals, celebrations or Bat Mitzvahs. The earliest item in the collection is a 16th century Jewish Bible made in Venice.
