Caucasus

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 27 items from the Caucasus region. These date from about 1600 to 1899. This collection includes oriental carpets and prayer rugs, Islamic textiles and Middle Eastern musical instruments. One carpet and two prayer rugs originate from Daghestan in the north Caucasus, now part of modern-day Russia, while 16 other carpets and a prayer rug come from the Baku, Kuba and Shirvan districts of Azerbaijan, including a ‘Masnad’ type embroidery. The remainder of the objects include a shepherd’s cloak from the north Caucasus, two pairs of socks, three metal belt ornaments, and a musical instrument. The instrument is a spike fiddle, or ‘joze’, made originally in 17th century Mosul, Iraq, but owned and embellished by a Georgian singer in the 19th century. The Caucasus is located in Eurasia and is an area composed of the nation states of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The region encompasses the vast Caucasus Mountains and is bordered by the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, Turkey and Russia.
