Arctic and Sub-Arctic

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 195 objects associated with the North American Arctic and sub-Arctic region which date from between 1894 and 2004. This collection comprises objects culturally associated with the Inuit and Aleut (Unangan) peoples. The best represented items are clothing, 19th century hunting and fishing implements and 19th and early 20th century souvenir models. The earliest surviving accession is a Gwich'in woman's beaded winter robe and leggings donated in 1894 by AE MacDougall. Three other acquisitions, which are not well provenanced, make up much of the remaining collection. These include a collection purchased in 1901 from Edward Lovett, a collection purchased in 1902 from Mrs E Wilkie, and a collection purchased between 1959 and 1965 from William Ohly, a painter, sculptor and collector, who owned the Berkeley Galleries in London. The North American Arctic and sub-Arctic region spans the whole of the northern American continent, encompassing much of Canada. Tribes from this region can be broadly identified as Algonquians and Athapascans.
