Borneo

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 140 objects associated with Borneo, which date from 1877 to 1971. This collection predominantly contains weapons in the form of arrows, poisoned darts, spears, parangs, or swords, a blowpipe and a shield. However, the earliest acquisition is a woven cotton sarong that was donated by the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in 1877. Other significant material represents the tribal Dyaks of Sarawak, including a collection of tribal Iban Dyak clothing and body ornaments, which was purchased from William Ogilvie. This assemblage comprises a hat, two brass girdles, a pair of armlets, a ceremonial rice-paddy stick, a decorated dancing stick and a sample of akarbara, or black coral, used to make jewellery. In addition, the collection holds various items of smoking paraphernalia, ceremonial staffs and model boats. The most recent accession to the collection is a Moro-style kris, or dagger, donated in 1971 by Mrs Rowan. Borneo, located in South East Asia, is the third largest island in the world, with just over three times the land mass of Great Britain. It is divided administratively between Indonesia, Malaysia and the independent nation of Brunei.
