South Western Coast of North America

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 74 objects associated with the North American south-west which date broadly from between 1891 and 1994. This collection comprises ceramic vessels, baskets, blankets, costume, jewellery, tools, clubs, arrows, a Katchina doll and ceremonial rattle. The earliest accession to this collection was in 1891, when John Rennie donated two obsidian tools from St Helena, Napa County California. A year later the collection acquired items from George C Crager, the interpreter with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. However by far the largest single acquisition comes from James Cree, a member of a Scottish Syndicate called the VV Cattle Company which owned the VV Ranch in New Mexico in the late 19th century. Cree sold his collection of Pueblo artefacts, primarily pottery, to Edinburgh, the British Museum and Cambridge as well as Glasgow. Several other items in the collection were purchased from the Department of Art and Ethnology at the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. The North American south-west covers the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado and was home to native tribes including the Apache, Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo, and Zuni.
