Models of Fossil Fuel Industry Related Vessels

Comments

Glasgow Museums has small collection of models of vessels involved in the extraction and transport of fossil fuels as part of the wider ship model collection. Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) powered the industrial revolution and are still essential sources of energy. The 11 models represent vessels involved in extracting oil and gas, such as the oil rig Sea Quest, or carrying oil from the Middle East to Europe such as British Trader. Other vessels in this collection were involved in transporting coal for the manufacture of coal gas (Mr Therm), and providing refuelling services to vessels with oil powered engines (Mercury). A fine diorama illustrates the development of tankers from the 1880s to the 1950s.
