Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1,000 specimens of minerals not included in the seven other groupings of its mineral collection. This collection contains a wide variety of mineral species. It includes examples of sulphate minerals, such as baryte, the halide fluorite, phosphates, chromates, hydrocarbons and several other groups. The specimens are from all over the world, including Scotland and the rest of Britain. One of the most striking specimens is crocoite (lead chromate) from Tasmania, which has bright orange-red needle-like crystals. There are also large and impressive specimens of fluorite (calcium fluoride) from localities in northern England. Two species from Scotland that should be mentioned are examples of lanarkite, a sulphate that occurs as a secondary mineral of lead deposits, named after its first discovery at Leadhills, Lanarkshire, and Pyromorphite, a phosphate mineral also occurring at Leadhills.
