Oxide minerals

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of nearly 1,000 oxide mineral specimens. This collection represents 35 species, including most of the commoner types. It contains oxide minerals from all over the world, with the majority coming from Europe, Scotland and the rest of Britain. About a third of the specimens are iron oxides, hematite and magnetite. There are also large numbers of cuprite (copper oxide), cassiterite (tin oxide) and the manganese minerals pyrolusite and manganite. Apart from the metal ores, the collection also contains a small number of gemstones. These include chrysoberyl, spinel, ruby and sapphire. The Scottish material comprises mainly ores, although there are also two sapphire specimens from the Isle of Mull. The oxide minerals include gemstones and important ores of metals such as iron, tin, chromium, titanium and uranium. The hydroxides are also grouped here.
