Scottish Coins

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 300 mainly Scottish coins, which date broadly from 500 BC to the 1940s. This collection contains excavated and donated coins made of silver, copper and alloys. Some of these, while not specifically Scottish, influenced the development of Scotland’s economic history from the 4th to the 20th century. Examples of these include those bearing the names of monarchs, such Kings Edward I and II of England, whose currency was commonly used in Scotland. The collection also includes bronze trade tokens and silver dollars, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. These record their place of origin, maker and their relevant trades and industries.
