Scottish Bank Notes

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 75 Scottish banknotes, which date broadly from 1778 to 1890. This collection comprises 35 notes and a further 40 cheques. The notes, mostly from Scottish merchant banks rather than the country’s chartered banks, come from throughout Scotland and represent Dumfries, Glasgow, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Falkirk, Edinburgh, Leith and Aberdeen. The collection of cheques, in contrast, come exclusively from Glaswegian banks. Both the notes and cheques are made of paper, and carry details of values, places of origin, dates and the banks who produced the money or held the relevant accounts. Also included in this collection are two examples of promissory notes, written in 1814, which are relevant to the development of credit accounts and cheques.
