Glasgow Museums has a collection of five objects relating to the Boer War dating from 1902 to 1905. One is a medal ribbons and the others are pendants bearing photographs of Generals and commemorating the Imperial Yeomanry. The photographs are of 1st Earl Frederick Roberts, Redvers Buller, 1st Baron Robert Baden-Powell, Sir George White, John French, 1st Earl of Ypres and 1st Earl Herbert Kitchener. Of these men French and Kitchener were closely associated with the First World War, and Baden-Powell with the Scout movement. The artist who made these commemorative pendants was Charles Horner. He had originally trained as a watch and clockmaker but by 1900 was making jewellery to order. By 1905 Horner had established a factory in Halifax producing numerous items including pendants. He produced a catalogue of all their products for customers to order from and the factory supplied to shops throughout Great Britain and its Empire. The Boer Wars were fought from 1880-1881 and 1899 – 1902. The pendants commemorate the second war.
