Subway Cars

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of three Glasgow Corporation subway carriages. These show the development of the subway system from its opening in 1896 when it was pulled by a steel cable, to the system’s electrification in 1936 and the closure of the old system in 1977. Two have been shortened and restored in order to show development of the carriages over the years, while Carriage Number 1 remains in exact condition as it did when it left the tracks in 1977.
