World War One

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 100 objects relating to civilian life in Glasgow during World War I which date from between 1914 and 1919. This collection comprises photographs, paintings, postcards, ceramics, tins, badges, egg boxes, rolls of honour, items relating to memorial plaques and windows, newspaper cuttings, booklets, lantern slides and other ephemera. There are embroidered and lace trimmed postcards, often sent between families and their loved ones in the armed services, along with a few war service badges, issued to men working in essential occupations, such as the railways. Commemorative items, bearing images of war leaders or the names of the allies, include those sold during the war, such as biscuit and confectionary tins, as well as post-war items including a mug from 1919. The photographs in the collection show not only the men who were away on service, but also the women who were left behind – taking on men's jobs, fundraising for the war effort and working in military hospitals. The wartime diet is represented by objects such as egg boxes and a sugar rationing declaration. Objects which commemorate the fallen, such as rolls of honour and memorial plaques, are also represented.
