Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 200 objects relating to civilian life in Glasgow during World War II which date from between 1939 and 1945. This collection includes etchings, clothing, gas masks, ration books, song sheets, dried milk tins, clothing coupons, an air raid shelter, powdered egg and furniture. Items relating to air raids include special spectacles to be worn under a gas mask and masks to fit over car headlights during blackout. A series of etchings by artist Ian Fleming depict life in wartime Glasgow and include images of air raids and their aftermath. There are also photographs of special advertising campaign trams which encouraged people to recycle their rubbish and not to waste food, as well as a good selection of utility clothing and furniture. Other items include official badges and hats issued to Special Police Force members and Wardens during the war.
