Exhibitions, Festivals and Events

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 3,000 items relating to exhibitions, festivals and events initiated and/or supported by Glasgow's civic authorities which date from between 1865 and 2005. This collection includes paintings, photographs, prints and drawings, posters, ceramics, glassware, costume and textiles, guidebooks and newsletters, medals, badges, tickets and architectural models. It holds items from such exhibitions as the Glasgow International Exhibitions of 1888 and 1901, the 1911 Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry; the Empire Exhibition, Scotland, 1938, the Glasgow Garden Festival 1988, and the 1990 Year of Culture (European City of Culture). Popular entertainment and education were major factors in these events, particularly the series of Glasgow's 'great exhibitions', but they also reflected a contemporary civic vision of Glasgow to the world. These range from the explicit civic pride of the 1888 Glasgow International Exhibition, to regeneration linked to the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. The collection also includes items from special events such as the 'Freedom of Nine Cities' programme to honour Nelson Mandela in 1993 as well as various items for the 1888 Royal Reception Room, such as tickets, medals and souvenir ware.
