19th Century European Men's Wear

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 80 nineteenth-century European men's wear main garments, predominately waistcoats, but also a few coats, shirts and trousers, dating from 1800 to 1900.

Men's clothing from this period is relatively limited as men's wear is often worn for longer than women's or sold on the large second-hand clothing market. Items are less likely to be retained for their sentimental value and are rarely offered to museums. Waistcoats survive in higher qualities as they were often kept due to their inherent decorative quality and the possibility that they could be re-worn at a later date. Several in the collection were labelled by their makers', providing an insight into several tailors working in Glasgow, Paisley and London. Nationally significant items include a man's coat of hard tartan from the 1820s.

In addition, there are examples of other types of men's garments under: 19th Century European Dress Accessories, 19th Century European Night and Dressing Wear, 19th Century European Outer Wear and 19th Century European Underwear.
