Dundee

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 330 objects about the city of Dundee, in Angus, Scotland which reflect a variety of subject collections such as transport and also Scottish history through collections reflecting on Scottish government and banking. There is heraldic stained glass possibly showing the arms of Sir John Scrymgeour, Constable of Dundee (died circa 1460-61) (Burrell Collection, 45.175) but the most common objects which relate to Dundee’s government and the economy are collections of communion and trade tokens of which there are 51 and 35 respectively dating between the 1700s to 1800s. The trade tokens commonly depict public buildings, industries and commercial businesses. There are related collections on working conditions and trade union and a print of George Mealmaker who was associated with the 1820 uprising. There are also collections on political representation and organisations and elected positions too, such as a 1939 trade union rule book (PP.1997.12.142) and badge commemorating a hundred years of Dundee’s Trade Council 1885-1985, (PP.2015.64.406) Other smaller collections represent Dundee’s industries and economy: a pint measure of 1882 (A.1938.11.ci), publishing (Valentine’s photographs and postcards and John Leng and D.C. Thomson’s books and comics), aerated water and marmalade making, fishing, metalwork, literature, Dundee’s professional football teams, and theatre. There is further topographic artwork of streets and buildings.
