Montrose Trade and Transport Tokens

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of three trade and transport tokens from Montrose dating from the late eighteenth century. All three are halfpenny tokens, one made in 1796 and another in 1799; however the last of the tokens is undated. The provenance and recipients of the tokens are not known although it is clear that the collection was registered with Glasgow Museums between 1923 and 1949 when coins, tokens and medals were regularly displayed at Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, and the People’s Palace Museum recalling the traditions and collections seen in previous generations such as in the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry in 1911. Montrose is a royal borough and these exhibitions commonly celebrated Scotland’s principle towns and cities. The town’s rich history and relationship with the sea accounts for the ‘Mare Ditat’ (The sea enriches) motto on one token, as well as image of the town and bridge over the River Esk.
