Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 52 military medals awarded during World War I (1914-1918). There are 10 Victory medals, three with ribbons, and 7 Great War for Civilisation medals, of which one still has its rainbow coloured ribbon, which are also Victory medals making 16 medals in all. There are also 6 Star Medals, two with ribbons; 6 British War Medals, one with a ribbon, and 6 King George V medals, awarded for the territorial service oversees, one of which has its ribbon. There are also 14 other medals including ones for army service dress collars, temperance, the red cross, long service, the merchant navy and assorted ribbons. The collection was accessioned between 1917 and 1994. The most common medals are service awards for Victory/ Great War of Civilisation and Star medals which were given to all who served in any theatre of the war and awarded together. The British War medal was also awarded to servicemen in all theatres too. The collection sometimes records the names of army divisions and individual soldiers, such as J.Davidson of the Seaforth Highlanders who had the Victory, Star and British War medals. As well as these are military arms and armour, uniforms, buttons, correspondence and art.
