Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 7 medals and 1 ribbon awarded for services during World War II (1939-1945). There are 2 Star medals,- with ribbons, 1 Victory medal, commemorating the 40th year in 1985, and 4 Defence medals with 1 ribbon (red, white and blue) for a War 1939-1945 medal. The most common are the Defence medals. These were awarded for mostly civilian services for those in the United Kingdom, Commonwealth and British colonies. The military service medals in the collection include Star medals awarded to those who had lost their lives, were badly injured or served with gallantry during the war with each of the British and Commonwealth armed services and merchant navy placing a minimum period of time to be served before the award could be made. The Victory medal in the collection is Russian.
