Glasgow Museums has a collection of 735 objects associated with the Andes, dating broadly from 50 to 2001. This collection comprises 646 objects from Peru, 56 from Ecuador, 20 from Bolivia and three from Colombia. The majority of the Peruvian items are archaeological artefacts, collected by Scottish travellers to the region in the 19th century. The remainder of the collection is diverse. It includes ceramics, costume and textiles, workbaskets, tools, mummy wrappings, body ornaments, toys, domestic artefacts, souvenirs, paintings and photographs, crafts, charms, hunting equipment and musical instruments. The collection also includes artefacts from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and Elderslie Park Museum. Important contemporary indigenous craft material and costume from Peru was donated to Glasgow Museums between 1962 and 1980 by Mrs Ena McRostie, a former missionary teacher in Lima. The Andes is a vast mountainous region along the west coast of South America, which crosses the borders of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
