Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 213 objects from the Indian Ocean Islands. These date from 1889 to 1900. This collection contains domestic tools and furnishings, agricultural tools, fishing equipment, weapons, spinning and weaving tools, floor matting and games, including a chessboard, kites and balls. It also has costumes and textiles, including military attire and women’s garments, and jewellery such as a silver bracelet and four pairs of earrings. There are also model boats, woodworking tools, a gold coin, a Qur’an bookstand, two musical instruments, a shadow puppet, a vase, several knifes, a dagger and an axe. The objects predominantly come from the Maldive Islands, although the island of Minicoi, the Andamans and the Seychelles are also represented. The collection notably contains material of an ethnographical nature collected in the Maldive in about 1899 by J Stanley Gardiner, and donated in 1900.
