Philippines

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 43 objects associated with the Philippines which date from between 1893 and 2001. This small collection remains poorly provenanced, being largely made up of isolated material from larger specialist collections and other institutions. The first item to be acquired was a shield from the island of Panay, donated in 1893 by Robert Corbet. The most recent acquisition has been a decorated short sword or 'kris' with a scabbard of lacquered wood, donated in 2001 by Essie Brown. Other items include Christmas decorations, costume and textiles, bags, arrows, a spoon, basket, paddle, powder horn, fan, and a shuttle for loom. The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean and the only south-east Asian country to have no land borders with any other country. It was named after Philip II of Spain following colonization by the Spanish and then by the Americans from the 16th century onwards and only gained independence following the Pacific War in 1946. This influence on the country is still felt today in the dominance of both the English language and Roman Catholicism.
