Segmented Worms (Annelida)

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 170 specimens of segmented worms (Annelida). These date from 1881 to 2007. This collection contains around 50 leeches, mostly Scottish with many from the JB Gray collection, and around 20 skate leeches collected by skate anglers as part of the Glasgow Museums’ skate tagging programme. There are about 40 earthworms or oligochaetes, mainly from Scottish locations and collected throughout the 20th century, and around 50 marine polychaetes, including several ‘sea mice’, which are all from British seas and mainly collected in the 19th century. Finally, there are several dried specimens, some of which are painted, and several Blaschka glass models from the Mason collection. The collection also contains detailed field notes from the JB Gray collection. Annelids or segmented worms are divided into many sections, with each section containing the same set of organs. There are around 12,000 species found worldwide. The majority of these are burrowers either in soil or in underwater sediments.
