St Kilda

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 100 objects from St Kilda. These date from about 1897 to 1959. This collection contains objects from the islands of Hirta and Soay. It includes significant correspondence between islanders and their landlord, McLeod of McLeod, dating from the 1870s to the 1890s. There are also photographs and a small oral archive that contains interviews and songs recorded by islanders. The collection includes domestic items and objects from textile manufacture, such as a spinning wheel, shuttle and yarn, and an example of one of the Soay sheep that provided the wool. The bird population on the islands provided food and other resources for the islanders, supplimenting sheep farming and fishing. It is represented by preserved kittiwakes, puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmers and gannets. In addition, the collection has examples of cod and ling fish, which were commonly caught around the islands. The island of group of St Kilda is the remotest part of Britain, located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides and 100 from mainland Scotland. St Kilda is a recognised World Heritage site for both human and natural history.
