Glasgow Museums has a collection of more than 200 objects from the Scottish Highlands. These date from about 600 to 1979. This collection includes paintings, jewels, textiles and carved stone. Portraits represent Highland nobility, such as the Duke of Argyll and the Duke and Marquis of Montrose, while other paintings and prints in the collection depict landscapes, towns and cities. Highland history is reflected in casts of medieval seals and later Communion tokens. Political and religious influence is indicated by armoury and a collection of casts of medieval Christian crosses and gravestones. Scottish crafts, such as Caithness glass and metalwork from Banff and Buchan, are also included in this collection. The collection also represents the farming and domestic life of the region and holds a good representative collection of costume and jewellery. The Scottish Highlands are well known for their rich heritage, natural environment and Gaelic language. They are located to the north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault, which crosses mainland Scotland from Helensburgh, north-west of Glasgow, to Stonehaven, south of Aberdeen.
