South East Asia

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 1,454 objects from South East Asia. These date from 1870 to 2003. This collection encompasses religious figures, wood and ivory carvings, costume, toys and games, models, musical instruments, weapons and tools. It also contains amulets, jewellery, tattooing implements, books, manuscripts, lacquerware, bronze and silver ware, photographs, furniture, writing equipment, utensils, containers and coins. It has a number of rare objects, including a pair of votive plaques from Burma, a 14th century bronze container from Java and a bed of gilded teakwood with glasswork acquired from the Royal Palace at Mandalay, which was taken from the last crowned monarch of Burma, King Thebaw, by the British in 1885. In addition, the 19th and 20th century textile and costume collections from Burma, the Philippines and Indonesia are a good representation of the area, with examples of regional variations. The most significant collections are those of J Stanley Gardiner, who donated 134 objects from the Maldives, and David Alec Wilson JP, who donated 160 objects between 1891 and 1923, including tribal costume, figure models, fishing implement models and children’s toys.
