Aeroplane and Aerospace Models

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 24 aeroplane and aerospace models dating from 1924 to 2008. In earlier times, airline companies operated out of booking offices in large cities like Glasgow. Along with colourful posters of faraway places, aeroplane models were frequently displayed in these offices as marketing tools. Most of the objects in this collection are high quality models used in these airline booking offices. The small Concorde models were also marketing devices which were ‘give-aways’ to first class passengers. There are a few amateur models showing much detail but made by enthusiastic individuals rather than companies. Most recently we acquired a full size model of Percy Pilcher’s Bat. Together these models illustrate the history of flight from glider to bi-plane to jet to space travel.
