Glasgow Museums holds 12 objects relating to the fatal air disaster, dating from the late 20th century. On the 21st December 1988 Pan Am 103 was blown out of the sky above the small Scottish town of Lockerbie. All passengers and crew were killed as were eleven residents of the town, a total of 270 people. A group of relatives of the victims was quickly formed and Dr Jim Swire became a leading member of the group. This collection holds several donations from Dr Swire relating solely to the Lockerbie bombing; a Panama hat given to Dr Swire by Colonel Gadaffi; an ice-cube timer made by Dr Swire; a circuit board made by the Mebo company which was said to be the type used to blow up Pan Am 103; two posters used by Dr Swire in an effort to persuade the government to talk with the relatives of the victims; seven CDs recorded with Dr Swire telling the Lockerbie story from his viewpoint and a replica of a dummy bomb made by Dr Swire to test airport security.
