Military Aircraft Parts

Glasgow Museums has a collection of almost 300 objects relating to military aircraft which dates from the 20th century. This part of the collection contains propellers from a German and a British aeroplane, and also some early aeroplane parts relating to WWI which might be compared with the selection of parts donated by the Ministry of Defence from WWII aircraft. Supermarine Spitfire LA198 is the most important item in this collection. It is the last Spitfire, in existence, to have served with 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron and is accompanied by oral histories from pilots who flew these aeroplanes. The Spitfire book lists all of these aeroplanes ever built and their details and the Augsburg Eagle does the same for the Messerschmitt. Both books are autographed by pilots who flew the aeroplanes and these alone make for interesting reading as do the many pieces of memorabilia donated by the pilots of different types of aircraft from WWII. Some of these are simply photographs with signatures but some others include notes and sketches and in the case of Iain Duncan Smith, his father’s book.
