Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 170 artefacts from Glasgow Cathedral that date from about 1136 to 1850. This collection includes casts of sculptures and stone bosses, metal objects, medieval glazed pottery sherds, shale discs, and crucible and glass fragments. It also contains 14 pieces of kiln furniture and coins including one silver shilling of William III, 1645–97, one half-crown of George IV (marked IIII), 1821, and one Greek or Russian coin (worth two kopeks), 1839–48. The casts of the sculptured stone bosses are believed to represent King Alexander II (1214–49), Isabel de Vallonus, the heiress to Roger de Vallonus, David Comyn, Lord of Kilbride, William de Bondington, Bishop of Glasgow 1231–59, and King Alexander III (1249–85) as a youth. There is also a cast from an effigy depicting Bishop Robert Wishart. The collection also includes the assemblage from the 1988–97 excavations conducted in the Nave, the Choir, the Crypt and the Session Room. The ceramic collection from these excavations includes 68 sherds of glazed pottery, including 24 green glazed sherds, 23 sherds of unglazed pottery, five fragments of strap handles, one ceramic marble and at least 12 miscellaneous sherds of pottery. Glasgow Cathedral stands on the site of a monastery founded by St Kentigern in the 6th century. The first cathedral was consecrated in 1136. The present cathedral dates from the 13th century, with some later additions..
