George Walton and Co

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 30 pieces produced by Glasgow designer George Henry Walton (1867–1933) and his decorating company George Walton and Co (1888–1905). These items date from between 1891 and 1910. This collection includes furniture, interior panelling, textiles and leaded glass. The main strength of the collection is furniture, which boasts a number of fine Walton designs including a Lovat Toilet Table (first exhibited at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901), a Beechcroft armchair, a Holland cabinet and a Brussels dining suite with Jocelyn sideboard and buffet table. The collection also includes furniture, decorative panels and material samples from Miss Catherine Cranston's Glasgow tearooms that Walton co-designed with Mackintosh. This material includes two coat stands from the Buchanan Street tearooms and examples of painted interior panelling and stained and leaded glass from her Argyle Street premises. Other furnishings in the collection include a three-part leaded glass window for 15 Grosvenor Crescent, two rugs designed by the company and manufactured by Alexander Morton and Co and a stencilled linen sample from Glenbank House, Lenzie.
