Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 225 samplers spanning over 300 years from 1625. The earliest is one of three spot samplers from around 1625 while other seventeenth century examples include twelve band samplers and seven white work pieces. These are all English. 180 samplers were made in the nineteenth century, many in Glasgow and surrounding areas. There are five from Ackworth School, in Yorkshire, made at the beginning of the century. A small number of plain sewing samplers were made in schools and colleges in Glasgow during the early twentieth century. Samplers are small pieces of material embroidered with a variety of different stitches and patterns. Initially they were made as pattern books by professional embroiderers, but in the seventeenth century many began to be made by young children as a means of learning and practicing needlework.
