Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 400 items relating to domestic technology. These date broadly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection includes objects that incorporate applied science into the home such as home appliances, home automation and other technological devices. There are 22 washing machines and three tumble driers as well over 50 irons representing the development of domestic laundry from the washhouse and steamie to ‘utility room’. The progress in kitchen equipment is charted through a dishwashing machine, over 30 cooking ranges and accessories, a blender, two food processors, an electric mixer and three refrigerators. There are also a number of electric kettles and toasters, and a microwave oven. The home comforts include electric and gas fires, bathroom appliances and fixtures, two domestic boilers and 75 vacuum cleaners, and attachments. The collection also contains nine knitting machines and over seventy sewing machines. There are many examples of electrical equipment used for personal grooming including over 20 hairdryers as well as curling tongs and heated curlers, hair irons and a waving and perming machine plus a number of sets of hair clippers and seven electric shavers.
