Glasgow Museums has a growing collection of around 300 international photographs that date from 1945 to 2000. Within the collection we have Magnum photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson. Sebastião Salgado, and Raymond Depardon. A recent acquisition in 2021, Depardon himself gifted Glasgow Museums over 70 photographs that he had taken in Glasgow in the 1980s for the Sunday Times, but were never published. This collection contains black-and-white and colour photographs, and include styles such as documentary, photojournalistic, street photography, scientific, conceptual, portraiture, landscape, and photomontage. There are numerous subjects represented within the collection such as Glasgow housing schemes, famine in Africa or the changing environment around the world. We have a strong representation of stories from or about the LGBTQ+ community such as Jane Evelyn Atwood’s documentation of a man’s death from AIDS, Peter Hujar’s New York photography, and Hal Fishers celebration, and study of San Francisco’s gay community in his work Gay Semiotics, 1977.
