Glasgow Museums has a small but substantial collection of International Sculpture made between 1945 and 2000. The collection of international sculpture greatly expanded in the years leading up to the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in 1996, with artists from around the globe being collected such as; Mexican artist, Tiburcio Soteno Fernandez, Russian artist Nikita Gashunin, American artist Michael McMillan and Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. A particularly strong collaborative relationship between the then Director of Glasgow Museums, Julian Spalding, and the French- American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, saw two major works coming into the collection as well as two site specific commissions at GoMA. As you approach GoMA, it’s tympanum has a coloured mirror collage spelling GoMA with the narrative of Glasgow’s patron saint, St Mungo, weaving around the letters. As you enter the building, the first room you pass through is The Mirror Room, by Saint Phalle. Because of this strong connection to Glasgow, in 2012 Eric and Jean Cass donated 13 sculptural works to Glasgow Museums giving us arguable the richest collection of Niki de Saint Phalle works in the UK. Glasgow Museums continues to collect work from this period, most recently work by Fischi & Weiss, which was collected through the CLD Art Fund International scheme.
