Toys, Games and Children’s books

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of almost 4,000 toys, games and children’s books and magazines. The majority are donations which came into the collection via the People’s Palace, Haggs Castle Museum and Scotland Street School Museum. A recent contemporary collecting programme has focused on purchasing the Toy of the Year as chosen by the UK Toy Retailers Association. The toys date to the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, with most dating to the 20th century. The collections hold a wide range of items, which represent all the main categories of children’s toys and games, although there are some gaps – for example the collections contain only a few soft toys. Items from the ancient history and world cultures collections are not included. Outdoor toys such as bikes and doll’s prams are part of the transport and technology collections, and are also not included here. School textbooks are also not included. The books, games and toys reflect the society and attitudes of the periods in which they were made in relation to class, gender and race.
