Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 2,500 toys. The majority are donations which came into the collection via the People’s Palace, Haggs Castle Museum and Scotland Street School Museum. A recent contemporary collecting programme has focused on purchasing the Toy of the Year as chosen by the UK Toy Retailers Association. The toys date to the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, with most dating to the 20th century. A wide range of toys and games are represented, however toys from the ancient history and world cultures collections are not included. Outdoor toys such as bikes and doll’s prams are part of the transport and technology collections, and are also not included here. The toys reflect the society and attitudes of the periods in which they were made in relation to class, gender and race.
