Celadon

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of celadon wares. This includes approximately 40 items. When Europeans first saw these colourful Chinese ceramics they had no name for their mysterious colour. The term ‘celadon’ comes from a character in a French play who wore a dress in a similar shade of green. The colour of celadon can range from blue to grey to green, with green tones being most popular. Some of the finest examples, known as ‘mise’, were reserved for the Chinese royal household, as tribute. Chinese celadon wares were popular in Korea and Thailand.
