Tea bowl

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of tea bowls. This includes 16 black ware tea bowls from the Song dynasty, known as ‘Jian ware’ or ‘temmoku’ after their Japanese name were fashionable ceramic ware for drinking tea during the Song dynasty. In contrast to Tang dynasty ceramics, the Song dynasty saw the prevalence of black ware tea bowls, although green ware (celadon) bowls were also produced. This had much to do with the custom of ‘tea contending’ which involves an appreciation of the contrasting colours of different teas. From royal court to commoner, black ware bowls were popular throughout the country.
