19th Century European Dress Accessories

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a large collection of nineteenth-century European dress accessories dating from 1800 to 1900. These are predominately women's, with some men's. The collection includes a large groups of bags and purses, fans, footwear – boots, shoes and stockings, headwear – bonnets, caps and hats, handwear – gloves, mittens and muffs, lace accessories, parasols and umbrellas. There are also small groups of accessories worn on the body, such as collars, chemisettes and belts.

Accessories from this period are relatively common survivors. The pieces in Glasgow Museums' collection were worn or carried predominately by the middle classes, whose families may have retained them for their sentimental value or decorative quality. Some accessories have also been acquired from collectors who were interested in their decorative qualities, including examples of lace accessories purchased by Sir William Burrell (1861–1958) and his wife Constance, Lady Burrell (1875–1961).

In addition, there are infants' and children's accessories under: 19th Century European Infants' and Children's Wearr.
