Roman Period Archaeology c. 50-c. 400 AD

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a small collection of Roman period artefacts found in Scotland and England, which encompasses everyday as well as unique and rare items. Among these are Samian ware, including a complete Samian bowl found on Glasgow Green in 1876; fragments of ceramic building materials from the Antonine Wall area; terracotta lamps; a Roman burial assemblage, including an intaglio ring; and a 2nd century AD distance slab. In addition, there are coins and metalwork such as fibulas; bracelets; mounts and figurines as well as modern replicas and models. A small number of objects are antiquarian discoveries of ceramics, tile, metalwork and human remains from England, which the museum acquired in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collection area does not include the museum’s collection of Roman artefacts from Italy and provinces of the Roman Empire.
