Criminal Justice

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 144 objects representing criminal justice through Scottish prisons and prisoners in Scotland excluding prisoners of war. As well as Glasgow’s Prisons at Duke Street, Barlinnie, South Prison, Gorbals and Jail buildings, prison services and prisoners the collection also represents prison and prisoners from other parts of Scotland. These include Ayr, Edinburgh, Inveraray and even St Kilda. Political support for prisoners is also included through badges or objects made by political prisoners such as women. Objects representing political and social support also extends to prison officers’ reports, awards, publications, and material highlighting support for LBGTQ +. The collection holds fittings from prison buildings including locks, grates, and keys as well as archives for prison hospitals and inspection. Prisoners themselves are also represented through clothes, archives, badges, and art. Examples of art made by prisoners correspond to the collections that David Donnison and Joyce Laing made via Barlinnie Prison in the late 20th century.
