Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 200 objects representing the noble title Duchess, of which 73 represent Scottish Duchesses (Argyll , Atholl , Albany, Abercorn, Buccleuch, Gordon, Hamilton, Lauderdale, Lennox, Montrose , Rothesay, Roxburgh, Sutherland). There are further objects for Duchesses who were members of the British royal family who held Scottish titles or influenced Scottish history such as the Duchesses of Fife, York, Cambridge and Kent. Beyond Scottish and British collections are others relating to European Duchesses. The collection generally categorised history, art and decorative art. The range of objects representing Scottish Duchesses varies from copies of representative medieval seals to prints, portraits and photographs showing the Duchesses in person. Patronage is also represented through church goods, medals and awards, and various ships and steam locomotives named after them. Most of the collection dates from the 18th and 20th centuries.
