British Imperialism and its Legacies: Exploitation of military power in the colonies

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a small collection of items which relate to the exploitation of military power in the colonies, that is, colonial subjects fighting on behalf of the British Empire. Colonial troops were called upon to fight abroad on behalf of the Empire, and to support British rule in their homelands.

Some conflicts covered in this collection are World War I, World War II, and the Somaliland Campaign (the period 1902–1904 specifically). Most objects relate to armed forces, but there are some other items which can help us understand how money and resources were funnelled from the colonies to support war.

Generally speaking, the objects were donated by people living in, or connected to, Glasgow. To date there has been no active collecting by Glasgow Museums on this subject, which is why the collection is limited in number and scope.
